  • Summary

    1. MOCVD Equipment which is used to make LED's used in lighting for notebooks and LED backlit LCD TV's, as well as indoor and outdoor lighting applications are currently in short supply creting a shortage of LED chips used in these applications.

    2. The 2 leading suppliers of this equipment are Aixtron and Veeco who control 90% + of the market.

    Analysis

    1. Lead times on this equipment are running in the range of approximately 6 months.  When the market began recovering in the Spring of 2009 LED manufacturers began to realize they did not have enough capacity in place to meet demand primarily being driven by the backlighting of notebooks and TV's, as well as the continued increase in LED technology for both indoor and outdoor lighting applications.  The manufacturers of the MOCVD equipment have not tried to add significant capacity due to the boom and bust nature of this business, and have managed the business by lead times which are now in the approx. 6 month area.

    2. Each of these pieces of equipment cost between $2M-$3M, and even after it has shipped it does take the LED manufacturer time to install and get it running with high yields.

    3. LED Backlit TV's which are driving demand will increase from approx. 2.5M sets in 2009 to 20-25 million sets in 2010, and by 2012 could be as high as 75 million set..  each set uses approximately 1000 LED's. so the demand in this sector is potentially very large.

    4. It is also rumored that App[lied Materials is considering entering this market as it had recently announced that it was going to make equipment for the OLED market
